Garage door spring repair in Boston and the South Shore

Broken spring repair for garage doors that have become heavy or will not open.

Signs of a spring problem

Springs balance the weight of a garage door so it can open and close. When one breaks, the door may become too heavy to lift or the opener may raise it only a few inches. Bolton repairs garage door springs in Boston and the South Shore.

A heavy door or struggling opener

A door that suddenly feels heavy or stops while opening may have a broken spring, damaged cable or a problem with the tracks.

Stop using the opener if it struggles to lift the door. Do not try lifting a damaged door by hand.

A loud bang or visible break

A spring can make a loud bang when it breaks. You may see a gap in a torsion spring above the door. Keep clear of the spring and do not remove or adjust any parts.

When you contact us, tell us what happened and whether the door is open, closed or partly raised. A photo taken from a safe position can help.

Keep a damaged door out of use

Keep people clear and stop using the door. Do not force it open or pull the release on a raised, damaged door.

Replacing the spring and checking the door

We replace the broken spring and check the cables, tracks and other hardware for damage.

Matching the spring to the door

Torsion springs usually sit on a shaft above the door. Extension springs run alongside the horizontal tracks. Both are under tension, and replacements must match the door weight and spring system.

Our work includes converting a Quincy body-shop door from extension springs to a torsion system. View the conversion. A conversion requires checking whether the door and available space are suitable.

Checking related damage

A broken spring can damage cables and other hardware. We check those parts along with the spring.

Damage to the panels or tracks may also affect whether the door can be repaired.

Questions about this service

Can I open a garage door with a broken spring?

Stop using it and arrange service. A broken spring leaves the door much heavier than usual, and the opener cannot safely take over the spring's job. Do not force the door or release it while it is raised and damaged.

Should both springs be replaced?

For a door with two springs, the garage door manufacturers' trade association DASMA recommends replacing both when one breaks. Some doors have only one spring. Replacement springs must match the door.

What affects the cost of spring replacement?

Door size and weight, spring type and any related damage affect the estimate. Replacing a spring is different from converting the door to another spring system.

Does a broken spring mean I need a new door?

A broken spring does not necessarily mean you need a new door. If the panels, tracks and other hardware are sound, replacing the spring may be enough.
